Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This usually appears when Office is not recognizing the expected desktop-app entitlement for the signed-in subscription, or when the installed Office version does not match the subscription on the account.
For Microsoft 365 home scenarios, the supported checks from the available guidance are:
- Confirm the subscription is active on the Microsoft account used to sign in.
- In an Office app, sign out of the account, restart the PC, and sign back in with the same Microsoft account to refresh the license.
- In the Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to make sure Office is fully updated.
- If the banner still appears, uninstall existing Office versions, restart the PC, and reinstall Office from the Microsoft account services page to avoid version or licensing conflicts.
A related cause is switching to a plan that does not include desktop Office apps. For example, Microsoft 365 Basic does not include a license for the Office desktop apps, so Office can prompt for an upgrade.
For business subscriptions, a similar prompt can appear after a plan change when Office needs to update to the version included with the new plan. In that case, selecting Update in the Account Notice dialog updates Office in the background and removes the old version.
