A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
English-only support.
For the Microsoft Authenticator error "Something went wrong. [4s8qz]" or repeated generic "Try again" failures, use these steps in order:
- Wait a few minutes and try again. A temporary app update or service interruption can cause sign-in to fail briefly.
- Open Microsoft Authenticator directly and confirm it starts normally, responds correctly, and the account is still listed.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator from the device app store. Versions older than 12 months are not supported.
- If this is a work or school account, update Company Portal too and confirm the device is compliant.
- Check notifications:
- Device Do Not Disturb / Quiet mode must be off.
- In device settings, push notifications for Authenticator must be enabled.
- In Authenticator, go to Settings > Notification Settings and make sure Show notifications is turned on.
- Check connectivity:
- Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off.
- If using VPN, disconnect it and test again.
- Check device settings:
- Make sure the phone date and time are correct.
- Restart the device after correcting them.
- Unlock the app before trying again. If Authenticator is locked, authentication may not complete.
- If notifications work for some accounts but not one specific account, remove that account and add it again, allowing notifications during setup.
Since uninstalling, clearing cache, and restarting were already tried, the next most relevant checks are app update, notifications, network switching, VPN off, date/time correctness, and app unlock state.
If multiple sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later or use a different MFA method if one is available.
If the issue still continues:
- In Authenticator, open the app menu and select Send feedback to send logs.
- For a work or school account, contact the IT admin/helpdesk.
- For a personal account, contact Support.
