    A business or school account is not required to get a Microsoft account.

    They are different account types:

    • A Microsoft account is for personal use, such as Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Outlook.com, Xbox, and other consumer services.
    • A work or school account is created by an organization administrator for business or education services, typically Microsoft 365 for business or Microsoft 365 Education.

    A business or school account is only needed when the service being used is set up for organizational access. In that case:

    • if a business service requires a work or school account, signing in with a personal Microsoft account can produce an error

    You shouldn't need a work/school account to get a Microsoft account.

    If you were asked for a work/school account, I am afraid some context is needed -

    Any chance you are trying to open a file shared with you by a user from a business/organization?

    Or are you trying to access a meeting, or join a Teams channel you were invited to by a user from a business/organization?

    I can see how in those situations you would be asked for a work/school account.

    Or are you trying to purchase commercial Microsoft 365 business subscriptions? If so, it would want a work/school account too.

    If you can tell me a bit more about the context, what website/app you were trying to use when this happened, I can help you narrow down what happened
