You shouldn't need a work/school account to get a Microsoft account.

If you were asked for a work/school account, I am afraid some context is needed -

Any chance you are trying to open a file shared with you by a user from a business/organization?

Or are you trying to access a meeting, or join a Teams channel you were invited to by a user from a business/organization?

I can see how in those situations you would be asked for a work/school account.

Or are you trying to purchase commercial Microsoft 365 business subscriptions? If so, it would want a work/school account too.

If you can tell me a bit more about the context, what website/app you were trying to use when this happened, I can help you narrow down what happened

    Hi Mike,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

To help me better understand your situation, could you please share a few more details?

    1. Are you trying to access data or a service that requires a Work or School Account?
    2. Have you recently purchased a new computer with Microsoft Word preinstalled, and when signing in, Word is asking you to use a Work or School Account?
    3. Or are you looking to sign up for a new Microsoft account?

Based on your needs, I will be happy to provide more accurate and relevant information.

At the same time, I would like to provide the following information:

Microsoft currently offers two types of accounts:

    1. Work or School Account
    2. Personal Account

For a Personal Account, you can sign up for free using the following link:

Microsoft Outlook Personal Email and Calendar | Microsoft 365

For a Work or School Account, this type of account is typically provided by your organization or educational institution. Alternatively, you can obtain a Work or School Account by subscribing to a Microsoft 365 Business plan and creating a new tenant:

You may also refer to the following documentation:

I hope this information is helpful.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

A business or school account is not required to get a Microsoft account.

    They are different account types:

    • A Microsoft account is for personal use, such as Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Outlook.com, Xbox, and other consumer services.
    • A work or school account is created by an organization administrator for business or education services, typically Microsoft 365 for business or Microsoft 365 Education.

A business or school account is only needed when the service being used is set up for organizational access. In that case:

    • personal Microsoft accounts cannot sign in to that business service
    • the sign-in page detects the account type and routes to the correct service
    • if a business service requires a work or school account, signing in with a personal Microsoft account can produce an error

For Microsoft 365 or Office, an account is required because the account is associated with the product license. That account can be either:

    • a Microsoft personal account, or
    • a work or school account, depending on how the product was obtained
