Surface Pro 6 is showing “Couldn't find a bootable operating system

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am facing a boot issue with a Microsoft Surface Pro 6. Model---

The device is showing the following error:

“Couldn't find a bootable operating system.”

I have performed some non-destructive checks:

• Windows Boot Manager and Internal Storage are visible in Surface UEFI.
• Windows Recovery USB boots successfully.
• However, in Windows Recovery Command Prompt, DiskPart does not detect the internal SSD.
• WMIC also detects only the USB flash drive, not the internal SSD.
• No formatting, partition deletion, clean, reset, or Windows reinstallation has been performed.

The device contains important official data, so data preservation is extremely important.

Please advise on the non-destructive diagnostic and recovery procedure. We do not want to reset, format, reinstall Windows, or modify/delete any existing partitions without confirming the impact on the data.

Kindly let us know the next recommended steps and whether the device requires hardware-level diagnosis.

Enter UEFI with Volume Up + Power.

Under Boot configuration, verify:

Windows Boot Manager — enabled

Internal Storage — enabled

USB Storage — enabled

Secure Boot — leave at its existing/default state for now

Do not change storage/boot settings unnecessarily

Microsoft specifically says that Windows Boot Manager and Internal Storage should normally be selected.

use the latest Surface Pro 6 recovery image and test DiskPart again. This rules out a stale-driver false negative in your current recovery media specifically.

SDT includes drive-level tests distinct from Windows' own enumeration. If SDT itself fails to detect the drive too, that's a third independent tool confirming the same result.

Log into account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey (or your organization's AAD/Intune portal if this is a managed device) and save the BitLocker recovery key for this machine. If the drive is later recovered by any means — reseating, controller-level recovery, or a lab — you will need this key immediately, and it's much easier to fetch now than after the device is in a repair queue.

or try these:

1. Turn off your Surface Pro 6.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up button while pressing and releasing the Power button.
3. Keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI (BIOS) menu appears.
4. Select Boot configuration on the left menu.
5. Verify that valid boot devices—including Windows Boot Manager and Internal Storage—are enabled and turned on. Look closely to see if there is an "X" icon over the internal storage, which means the hardware is not recognized.
