Hi,

I accidentally set up my HP computer with the wrong Microsoft account. How do I start over again? I can't sign into the one I signed in with originally, because it was misspelled.

If the PC was set up with a misspelled Microsoft account and that account cannot be accessed, the supported way to start over is to reset the PC and set up Windows again with the correct account.

Warning: choosing Remove everything erases personal files, apps, and settings on the device.

    Steps from the sign-in screen:

    1. On the Windows sign-in screen, press and hold Shift.
    2. Select Power > Restart.
    3. After restart, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    4. Choose Remove everything.
    5. Choose Local reinstall or follow the available reset prompts.
    6. Complete setup again and sign in with the correct Microsoft account.

If the reset asks for a BitLocker recovery key, the device is encrypted and the key is required to continue.

If access to Windows is still possible with a local account, Windows also supports switching account types in Settings > Accounts > Your info:

    • Sign in with a Microsoft account instead if currently using a local account
    • Sign in with a local account instead if currently using a Microsoft account

For sign-in problems, Microsoft also provides the Sign-in helper.
