After plugging in a USB microphone there are now a frustrating number of steps to complete before being able to use it. Even more annoying is these settings cannot be saved. Having wasted so much time over the last few weeks I’ve rolled my new tablet back to Windows 10. Plugin and use microphone.

For Windows 11, the main setup items that affect a newly plugged-in USB microphone are microphone privacy access and the selected input device.

  1. Turn on microphone access:
    • Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
    • Turn on Microphone access
    • Turn on Let apps access your microphone
    • If needed, turn on the specific app that should use the microphone
    • For desktop apps, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone
  2. Make sure the USB microphone is selected as the input device:
    • Start > Settings > System > Sound
    • Under Input, select the USB microphone in Choose your input device
    • Speak into it and check Test your microphone to confirm Windows is hearing it
  3. If the microphone level is too low, adjust it:
    • Start > Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings
    • Open the Recording tab
    • Select the microphone > Properties > Levels
    • Adjust Microphone and, if available, Microphone Boost
  4. If it still does not work, run the built-in troubleshooter:
    • In Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Recording Audio

The supported guidance does not state that these settings cannot be saved. It shows that once microphone privacy and input selection are configured, Windows can use the USB microphone normally.
