I would like my daughter to use my laptop for homework. Unfortunately, we have forgotten her password. Changing the password is proving to be a challenge. How can we move forward?

    Hi!

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Can you help me with few more questions :

Does your daughter’s login show an email address or just a username?

    1. Can you still log in using your own administrator account on the laptop? (assuming you have your main profile and another for your daughter)

You mentioned you tried to forgot the password already, can you tell me what happened when you did that?

The next step depends on which type of account your daughter uses on that laptop.

    1. If it is a Microsoft account:
      • On the Windows sign-in screen, select I forgot my password.
      • Or select Sign-in options > Web sign-in, sign in, then select Forgot my password.
      • From a browser, the password can also be reset at Reset password.
      • After receiving the verification code, enter it, select Next, then create a new password.
    2. If it is a local account:
      • On the sign-in screen, select the password entry button.
      • Select OK > Reset password.
      • Answer the security questions that were set when the account was created.
      • Enter a new password.
    3. If already signed in to Windows with that account or with the account PIN:
      • Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • Select Password > Change.
      • If the current password is forgotten, select Forgot my current password or I forgot my password and follow the verification steps.
    4. If the account is a local account and there is another administrator account on the PC:
      • Open Computer Management.
      • Go to Local Users and Groups > Users.
      • Right-click the child’s account and select Set Password...
      • Enter and confirm the new password.

    Important:

    • If the local account cannot be reset with security questions and there is no administrator account available, the device must be reset.
    • Microsoft support cannot retrieve or circumvent a lost or forgotten password, and support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
    • If sign-in recovery for a Microsoft account is failing, use the Sign-in helper or Sign-in Helper, then contact Contact Microsoft Support if needed.
