Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If the account is active but Office still asks to activate, the usual causes are: the wrong account is signed in, multiple Office copies are installed, or the license status in the app has not refreshed.
Try these steps in order:
- Check that the license is on the same account used in Office. Sign in to Services & subscriptions and confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office product is listed there.
- In Word or Excel, sign in with that same account. If prompted for activation, use the Microsoft account tied to the purchase. For Microsoft 365 and Office 2016 or later, activation is done by signing in with the Microsoft account, not by entering a product key.
- Refresh the license in the app. In an Office app, go to File > Account and use Update License.
- Check for more than one Office installation. On Windows, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Search for office. If more than one version appears, uninstall the version not being used, restart the computer, then open Office and sign in again.
- If activation still fails, run an Online Repair. This is the next step recommended after removing extra Office versions.
- If the app shows Product deactivated, select Sign in and enter the Microsoft 365 account again. If the install was previously deactivated, signing in reactivates it.
What to expect:
- If Office is not activated, documents can usually still be opened and printed, but editing and creating new files are disabled.
- If the subscription is active and the correct account is used, the activation prompt should stop after the license refresh or reinstall conflict is fixed.
