I cannot tell you if it is new or classic as it crashes immediately. It was installed initially but I think it was the web version and it looked new. I was trying to download hte apps from my office 365 subscription to this new laptop to change it back to classic. I do not like new at all. Now i cannot do anything within outlook. It does not launch.
Brand New Surface 8th Edition Outlook Crashing
This is a brand-new Surface 8th Edition. Out of the box required significant system updates. Completed. Outlook worked initially but now flashes briefly and immediately terminates. Windows and Surface firmware are fully updated. Outlook has been repaired, reset, uninstalled and reinstalled, and Windows has been restarted multiple times. Word and my Microsoft 365 subscription work normally. Reliability Monitor has also shown failures involving Windows components. I need to diagnose the new device rather than repeat basic Outlook troubleshooting. What do I do now?

2026-09-07T13:06:47.98+00:00 I uninstalled it and installed New Outlook for Windows from the MS Store. Exact same issue. Does not launch. Flashes briefly and terminates. This is a brand new 3000 machine. I am really frustrated having now spent three hours trying to solve this.

2026-09-08T04:08:14.09+00:00 Hello Eryn,
From what you described, Outlook initially worked on your new Surface, but after completing the required Windows updates, it now flashes briefly and closes immediately. The issue continues even after repairing, resetting, reinstalling, and restarting the device.
First, check for and repair any damaged Windows system files. Right-click Start, select Terminal (Admin), and run these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannowAfter both commands are complete, restart Windows. Then, try opening it in safe mode, which disables add-ins.
To identify your Outlook version without opening the app, select Start and search for Outlook. Check whether the search result is labeled Outlook (new) or Outlook (classic).
- For Outlook (new), press Windows + R, enter
olk.exe --safeand select OK. - For Outlook (classic), press Windows + R, enter
outlook.exe /safeand select OK.
Safe Mode starts Outlook with add-ins and certain additional features disabled. If Outlook opens this way, something loaded during its normal startup may be causing the crash.
Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.
