Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
- Have the user try up to five times within 5 minutes to trigger the MFA prompt again.
- In the Microsoft Authenticator app, confirm the app is unlocked, notifications are enabled, and the app is updated to the latest version.
- Check for device issues:
- Verify the phone has internet access.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Confirm the device date and time are correct.
- On the sign-in page, select Other verification options and try a different method if one is available.
- If the user normally expects a code in Microsoft Authenticator, open the app and verify whether the account entry is present and responsive.
- If the user has made many sign-in attempts, wait and try again later or use a different MFA method. Repeated attempts can trigger protection that temporarily blocks more attempts.
- If text or phone verification is being used as a fallback, confirm the phone number is correct. Third-party security apps on the phone can also block verification texts or calls.
- If the issue continues, an admin should check the user account in the Azure portal:
- Go to Microsoft Entra ID > Users > select the affected user.
- Check whether Block sign in is enabled, and disable it if it is enabled.
- If another Global Administrator or Authentication Administrator is available, reset the user’s MFA methods by requiring re-registration of multifactor authentication. This removes existing MFA methods and forces the user to set them up again at next sign-in.
- If the user still cannot complete authentication, capture Authenticator logs from Send feedback in the app and contact the organization’s IT admin or helpdesk. If no alternate admin can assist, open a support case.
Note: Requiring MFA re-registration removes the user’s existing authentication methods. Ensure the user is ready to register a new method before doing this.
