For a school account, repeated failed sign-in attempts can trigger Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication protection and temporarily block more attempts. The supported recovery path is:
- Stop repeated sign-in attempts for now. Multiple attempts can cause Microsoft Entra MFA to prevent additional attempts.
- Try a different MFA method if another one is already registered for the account.
- On the phone, check the Authenticator app itself:
- Make sure the app is unlocked.
- Make sure notifications are enabled and not silent.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
- Check internet connectivity and try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure the device date and time are correct.
- If the app showed a code but the approval/input prompt did not appear, open Authenticator and confirm the account is still listed and the app opens without errors.
- If the issue continues after waiting and trying another method, contact the school IT administrator or help desk. For work or school accounts, the admin should investigate the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.
- Before contacting the admin, use Send feedback in the Authenticator app to capture logs for diagnostics.
If the account is blocked because of repeated attempts, waiting until the block clears and avoiding more retries is important.
