Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Based on Microsoft's licensing model, an Office Home & Student perpetual license is typically linked to the Microsoft account that was used during the initial activation. Unfortunately, there is no self-service option to transfer a redeemed license from one Microsoft account to another.
Since your university email account will be deactivated soon, I recommend taking the following steps as soon as possible:
- Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com using the account that was used to activate Office.
- Check Services & subscriptions to confirm that the Office Home & Student license is associated with that account.
- If the account is still accessible, add a personal email address, phone number, and other recovery methods to help maintain access in the future.
- Contact Microsoft Support before the university disables the account. Explain that the Office Home & Student license was bundled with your personally owned laptop and was inadvertently activated with a student email that will soon be retired. Provide proof of purchase and ask whether any licensing or account recovery options are available for your specific situation.
While license transfers between Microsoft accounts are generally not supported, Microsoft Support is the best team to review your case and determine whether any exception or alternative solution may be available. Please note that this is a community forum staffed primarily by volunteers and community members. We do not have access to Microsoft licensing systems, account records, or the ability to transfer licenses on your behalf. Only Microsoft Support can review the license association and determine what options may be available for your specific case.
