How Chat started: On the page on which the error message appeared, there was an option at the bottom right to open chat. As far as I can recall, that is how I started the chat.

I agree with what you said. I am concerned that I somehow open my computer for attack.

Unfortunately this doesn't tell me much about what page. Were you browsing the web when an error message pops up? If so, then it does sound like a typical IT support scam case, because Microsoft support doesn't come to you like that.

Did you let them into your computer?

OK. I started in Amazon. I had purchased and download a copy of Office a year ago. I bought a new computer and tried to download to it using the product key and received an error screen. I tried this again just now, and got a different screen saying the product code had already been used. This does not appear to be the screen I received before. There was no link to chat.

There are two separate issues here -

Issue 1 - The code is only for the first time you used, is to redeem the product so it can be tied to your Microsoft account. Moving forward, you shouldn't have to use the code anymore; it is considered "already used". To install, you use your Microsoft account moving forward. Please go to https://www.office.com

Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the subscription. Click on the 9-dot icon on the upper left > More apps.

Then on the upper right, click on "Install apps". This will now download the installer file. Once downloaded, click on the file to install. It will install the Desktop version of the apps for you then.

Issue 2 - you allowed them to get into your computer. To be safe, it is best that you factory reset your computer to start over, to get rid of anything they planted in your computer. I would also suggest that you disconnect that computer from the internet. Back up any files you need to back up to a usb drive or something. Then go to Settings > System > Recovery, choose reset this PC and choose the option that deletes everything.
