Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
MAK activation limit means the Multiple Activation Key has reached its allowed activation count. Replacing the SSD and reinstalling Windows can count as another activation.
What to do:
- Verify the exact activation error code.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run:
slmgr.vbs /ato - If it returns a hexadecimal error, run:
slui.exe 0x2a 0x<ErrorCode>
- If the error is
0xC004C020, the MAK has exceeded its limit.- The supported resolution is to request more activations.
- Contact the Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers to increase the MAK activation limit.
- If the error is
0xC004C003or0xC004F051, the key is blocked.- A new MAK is required.
- Install the new key and activate Windows again.
- Re-enter the MAK carefully before escalating.
- A mistyped key can also cause activation failures.
- If both internet and telephone activation fail,
- Contact a local Microsoft Activation Center.
- Have the Volume License agreement information and proof of purchase available.
For this scenario, the primary fix is to contact the Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers and request additional MAK activations, or obtain a new MAK if the current one is blocked.
