Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Some Outlook.com/Hotmail messages can be delayed or fail for reasons outside the mailbox, even when other messages arrive normally. The most relevant checks are:
- Check Junk Email and the Other tab in Outlook.com. Messages can be filtered there instead of Inbox.
- Check Filter > Sort > Date to make sure messages are not appearing out of order.
- Check whether email forwarding is enabled.
- Check whether any mail rules are moving or hiding messages.
- If the missing messages were sent from a specific sender or service, ask the sender to check whether they received a delivery failure message. If they did, the problem may be on the sending side rather than with the Hotmail mailbox.
- If the account is being accessed while travelling or from a new device/location, Microsoft may detect unusual sign-in activity and require confirmation before normal access continues.
- If the issue continues, use the Outlook.com interactive troubleshooter.
If the missing messages are only from one sender or service, that usually points to a sender-side delivery problem rather than a problem with the Hotmail account.
