Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
If the subscription shows as current, the pop-up is usually caused by Microsoft 365 not refreshing its local subscription status after a billing interruption.
Try this in order:
- Close all Office apps Close Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and any other Microsoft 365 apps.
- Confirm the subscription is active Go to the Services & subscriptions page and verify Microsoft 365 is listed as active.
- Check the payment method status Go to the Payment options page and make sure the payment method does not show an error.
- Sign out and sign back in to Office Open Word or another Office app, sign out of the Microsoft account used for the subscription, close the app, reopen it, and sign back in with the same account. This can refresh the license information.
- If the subscription was just renewed, wait for sync to complete Payment status can take up to 24 hours to fully sync across services.
- If the notice continues after that
- If Microsoft 365 was bought from a physical box or retail card, the subscription may not start until the product key is redeemed.
- For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal, contact Microsoft Support.
- If this is a work or school subscription, contact the Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.
If the warning is ignored, Office can eventually go into reduced functionality mode, where documents can still be opened and printed but not edited. In the meantime, Office Online can be used for free in a web browser at Office.com.
