Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
There is no self-service way to manually clear a rate-limit on a Microsoft account verification method. The documented recovery path is to stop repeated attempts, wait, and then retry with another available method or after the block expires.
Based on the described symptoms:
- Stop repeated verification attempts Excessive or repetitive requests to phone numbers or alternate methods can trigger a temporary block. Waiting at least 24 hours can help, and if the block does not clear, the documented guidance is to wait longer, up to 1 week.
- Try another network only once or sparingly If the block is tied to the current sign-in context, switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular data or using a different Wi‑Fi network can help.
- Check whether the phone can receive Microsoft SMS
- Make sure the phone is not blocking texts from unknown numbers.
- If prompted, choose I don’t have a code to request another code.
- Make sure the inbox is not full and the messaging app is working.
- If the number is VOIP, it cannot be used for sign-in or verification codes; a mobile number is required.
- If email verification was expected, verify the mailbox rules Verification emails can go to Junk. Valid Microsoft verification emails come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com. Mark that sender as trusted.
- If the backup email no longer appears, verify or replace security info during sign-in If access to the listed phone or email is no longer available, select I don't have any of these in the sign-in flow and follow the prompts.
- If sign-in succeeds with the password, update security info from the Security page Go to the Microsoft account Security tab, select Manage how I sign in, then choose Add a new way to sign in or verify. From there, add another verification method.
- Do not change all security info at once Changing all security info at the same time can cause the account to be restricted for 30 days.
- If the sign-in flow says “make sure you can receive a security code” That means the account needs current security info. It can be skipped for 24 hours at a time, but after seven days from the first notice, verification or addition of new security info is required before sign-in continues.
- Use the sign-in helper if the block persists The documented troubleshooter is the next step for sign-in issues: Start
- Support limitations Support agents are not allowed to send verification codes or access and change account details.
The proper procedure when the password is still known is:
- Sign in if possible.
- Open the Security page.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Add a new verification method.
- If the old method is unavailable during sign-in, use I don't have any of these and follow the recovery prompts.
- Avoid repeated retries while blocked, because that can extend the lock.
