Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
A personal Microsoft account and a Microsoft 365 business account cannot be directly converted into each other. To use business-only capabilities, the path is to set up a new Microsoft 365 business subscription and then move the needed data.
Recommended path:
- Buy or sign up for a Microsoft 365 business subscription.
- Personal/Family and Business plans are separate.
- During setup, create the new work account for the business subscription.
- Keep or cancel the personal subscription depending on needs.
- If switching from a home plan to a business plan, the business plan is not an in-place upgrade of the personal plan.
- If the personal subscription is no longer needed, cancel it from the Subscriptions tab at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Move data to the business account as needed.
- OneDrive files: sync both accounts to the device and drag files between the two OneDrive folders.
- Outlook data: export email, contacts, and calendar to a
.pstfile, then import into the business mailbox. - Teams data: add the new work account in Teams. Existing personal Teams chats are not migrated automatically; use the old and new accounts side by side during the transition. Recreate meetings in the new work account and delete the originals from the old account if appropriate.
- Sign in to Microsoft 365 apps with the new business account.
- After the business subscription is active, use that work account for business services that require a business subscription.
If the current subscription was purchased through a third-party billing partner, subscription changes such as canceling or switching plans may need to be handled through that partner.
