Microsoft Entra: request to unverify and release a custom domain from a tenant that cannot be administered

I need Microsoft Data Protection to unverify and release a custom domain from a Microsoft Entra ID tenant. I do not need the tenant recovered. I only need the custom domain released so it can be verified on another directory.

Situation:

  • The custom domain is currently verified on a Microsoft Entra tenant that I can no longer administer.
  • Sign-in to that tenant fails with AADSTS50076 (MFA required; the registered authenticator is no longer available).
  • There is no other Global Administrator who can delete the domain from the tenant.
  • I control public DNS for the domain and can complete any ownership check Microsoft provides (for example a TXT record).
  • I will provide the tenant identifier and domain name privately to Data Protection. I am not posting those identifiers here.

Request:
Please escalate this to the Microsoft Data Protection / Tenant Recovery team to unverify and release the custom domain from the holding tenant so it can be added to a different Entra tenant.

Please note: This is a user-to-user Community forum. No one here can access Microsoft’s backend systems, create a support ticket, or make changes to your account, tenant, or billing information. You must contact Microsoft Support directly, as only an authorized support agent can assist with these requests.

Hello CC Iglesias,

Thank you for clearly explaining the situation.

Since the custom domain is still verified in a Microsoft Entra tenant that you can no longer administer, this request cannot be completed through the user-to-user Community forum. Microsoft must first verify that you are the legitimate domain owner or an authorized representative before the domain can be removed from the inaccessible tenant.

Please contact Microsoft Customer Support by phone and ask the frontline representative to create a support ticket for assistance from the Data Protection Team. This team has the appropriate security procedures and access required to verify domain ownership and review the request to release the custom domain.

You can find the Microsoft Customer Service number for your country or region here: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, it can be difficult to get through to the correct support queue, and automated systems don't always work as expected. If you can't get through on your first try, I suggest trying again later or at a different time.

Please be prepared to complete a domain ownership verification, such as adding a DNS TXT record. Microsoft may also request tenant, subscription, company, or billing information during the verification process.

I hope the information provided helps guide you in the right direction. Although I’m unable to take direct action, I sincerely hope that the steps and recommendations I’ve shared can support you through the process.

Warm regards,
