Could you share the exact error shown when you select Make primary?

Also, please confirm:

Are you making the change under your personal Microsoft account’s Manage how you sign in page?
Is the new alias a personal address such as Outlook.com or Gmail, or does it use your new organization’s domain?
Does the old onmicrosoft.com account still appear anywhere under Access work or school in Windows?

These details are needed because the standard alias-change process should allow a verified alias to be made primary, but an organization may restrict the use of its email addresses.

If other aliases already exist but the primary alias still cannot be changed, the supported path is:

Sign in to Your info and open Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
Under Account aliases, confirm that the new alias is listed and verified.
Select Make primary next to the alias that should become the new primary address.
If the old address is no longer needed, select Remove next to it only after the new alias is primary.

If the change is blocked, these are the documented causes and next actions:

If the address to be added is already associated with another Microsoft account, it cannot be added as an alias.
If the account shows an organization policy restriction or a legacy managed-account condition, add and verify a new personal alias, set it as primary, and if the system still will not switch, contact Microsoft Support.
If the account has only one alias or the other aliases do not work, add another alias first, then make that alias primary.
If the error is ADDriverStoreAccessNonLocalException, the primary alias may match an existing work or school account in Microsoft 365 or Azure Active Directory. In that case, set a different personal alias as primary, or add a personal alias and then remove the work email from the Microsoft account.
If the system says to try again next week, the alias-change limit has not yet been lifted. Wait a few more days and try again.

For Outlook apps after changing the primary alias:

In Outlook for Android or iOS, delete and re-add the account.
In Outlook for Windows, if the account displays as outlook_[long series of letters and numbers]@outlook.com, set an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com alias as primary, then remove and re-add the account.
