My Dell originally came with Office Home & Student 2016. The laptop was later reinstalled and now has unlicensed Microsoft 365. I don't have the original product key or documents. Can you check whether the Office license can be recovered from the device/purchase information?

    Hi, tarun jaiswal

The Office license usually cannot be extracted from the current Windows installation after the laptop has been reinstalled. The license details are also separate from the Windows key stored in the BIOS.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Use the Dell Service Tag to check the laptop’s original configuration and order details on the Dell Support website. If Office Home & Student 2016 appears on the original invoice or system configuration, contact Dell Support and ask them to verify the Office entitlement supplied with that specific computer. Dell recommends contacting its support team when the original license type is unclear. Reinstalling Microsoft Office on a Dell Computer

Please make sure that you completely understand the risk before retrieving any suggestions from the above link.

Check whether Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery can restore the original Dell factory image. This may restore the Office installer and its device-specific activation data. Back up personal files first because factory recovery normally removes current apps and data.

It is recommended that you avoid third-party “product key finder” programs. After Windows was reinstalled, they generally cannot recover the previous Office key and may only display a generic installation key.

If Dell cannot confirm Office on the original order, the old license is unlikely to be recoverable from the device alone.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Yes—there are only a few supported ways to recover it, and recovery from the device itself is not described here.

For Office Home & Student 2016, the key points are:

    1. Check whether the license is already tied to a Microsoft account.
Sign in to the Services & subscriptions page with every personal Microsoft account that may have been used when Office was first set up. If the Office product appears there, reinstall from that page and sign in to activate. A product key is not needed to reinstall when the purchase is already associated with the Microsoft account used to buy Office.
    2. If the laptop now shows Unlicensed Product, first confirm the correct account is being used in Office. Using the wrong account can cause Office to show as unlicensed.
    3. Check for multiple Office installations.
Having more than one Office installation can cause activation conflicts. In Windows, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, search for office, uninstall versions not being used, restart the PC, then open an Office app and sign in again.
    4. If the original key was lost or damaged, Microsoft support may be able to help if valid proof of purchase is available. The documented path is to contact Microsoft support for replacement options or other assistance.
    5. If the current installation came preinstalled without a product key and activated through the Microsoft Store path, reinstalling from the Microsoft Store app may be required for that type of Office install.

What this means for this case:

    • If Office Home & Student 2016 was redeemed online and linked to a Microsoft account, it can usually be recovered through Services & subscriptions.
    • If it was only activated locally on the old installation and never linked to a Microsoft account, it may not appear there.
    • If proof of purchase still exists, Microsoft support is the next step.
