I opened up Microsoft Word on my Mac and received the following message ""Your account [Email] doesn't allow editing on a Mac. To learn more, contact your admin about your Microsoft 365 plan." I checked my licenses and I have "The latest desktop version of Office" and "Office for the web". What do I need to do to make this work?

    Hi Merrill Strachan

You can refer to AI's recommendation first, as it already covers the primary areas we would normally investigate, including verifying the license assignment, confirming the correct account is signed in, checking for Office updates, and reactivating the Microsoft 365 Apps.

Based on your screenshot, the account appears to be assigned Microsoft 365 Business Standard, and the service plans include "The latest desktop version of Office", which generally indicates that the user is entitled to use the desktop Office applications on both Windows and Mac. Because of that, the issue may not be related to the license entitlement itself.

One additional area I would suggest checking is whether there is a problem with the local Office activation credentials on the Mac. In some cases, Office may continue to use an outdated authentication token or cached sign-in information, which can prevent the application from correctly recognizing an active subscription.

As an additional troubleshooting step, try:

    • Closing all Office applications.
    • Opening Keychain Access on the Mac.
    • Removing Office-related credentials, such as: Microsoft Office Identities Cache, Microsoft Office Identities Settings, Microsoft Authentication entries...
    • Restarting the Mac > launching Word again and signing in with the licensed Microsoft 365 account.

I would also recommend confirming how Office was installed. If Office was originally installed from the Mac App Store, testing with a fresh installation downloaded directly from Office.com may help rule out installation-specific activation issues.

Also, if the account is managed by an organization, the fastest escalation is to reach out to your organization's IT administrator to verify that the license is correctly assigned to the user and that the desktop Office service plan is enabled. After the license has been confirmed, have the user sign out of Word, quit the application completely, reopen it, and sign in again to refresh the activation status.

I hope this information helps and if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask via comment section.

That message usually means Word for Mac is signed in, but the app is not activated with a license that currently allows desktop editing on that Mac.

Based on the details shown, these are the most relevant checks and fixes:

    1. Sign out of Word and sign back in with the licensed account
      • Open Word.
      • Sign out of the current account.
      • Quit Word completely.
      • Reopen Word and sign in again with the same Microsoft 365 account that shows the desktop Office entitlement.
      • If prompted, use Sign in with another account to make sure the correct account is used.
    2. Verify the account actually has the Office license attached
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      • Select Install Microsoft 365 or Office.
      • If the license appears there, that is the correct account to use for activation.
      • Seeing web apps alone does not confirm a desktop license, but if the install option and Office license are listed, that is the account Word should use.
    3. If this is a work or school account, have the admin verify license assignment
      • For organizational accounts, the license must be assigned by the Microsoft 365 administrator before Office on Mac can activate.
      • If the license was removed, changed, or not fully assigned, Word can open in reduced functionality mode.
    4. Check whether Word is using the wrong stored license
      • If multiple Microsoft licenses have been used on this Mac, Word may be attached to the wrong one.
      • In that case, remove the Office license files on the Mac and then reactivate with the correct account.
    5. Update Office on the Mac
      • Open any Office app.
      • Select Help > Check for Updates.
      • In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update or Update All.
      • Restart the app after the update finishes.
    6. If editing is still blocked after updating, sign out and back in again
      • Quit the app completely with Command + Q.
      • Reopen it.
      • Go to the app’s account settings, sign out, then sign in again with the Microsoft account.
    7. Confirm the Mac can reach Microsoft’s licensing service
      • Office for Mac must contact the Office Licensing Service on the internet to stay activated.
      • If it cannot verify the subscription, Office can go into reduced functionality mode, where documents can be opened and printed but not edited.

If this is a Microsoft 365 Business Standard work account, the plan itself includes desktop Office apps. In that case, the most likely causes are:

    • Word is signed in with the wrong account
    • the assigned license has not been fully applied by the admin
    • the Mac is using an old or incorrect stored Office license
    • Office needs to be updated and reactivated

If the account is managed by an organization, the fastest escalation is to ask the Microsoft 365 admin to confirm the user license assignment for Office on Mac, then sign out of Word, quit it, reopen it, and sign in again.
