Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
For error 0x0 / License not found on a Mac where Office opens documents in reduced functionality mode, the supported fix is to update Office first.
- Make sure the Mac is running macOS 12 or later.
- Close all Office apps.
- Open Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.
- Install all available updates with Update All.
- After updates finish, open Word again and test activation.
If Office was installed from the App Store instead of microsoft.com:
- Close all Office apps.
- Open the App Store.
- Select Updates.
- Update Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
- Reopen Word and test.
If activation still fails after updating:
- Confirm the Mac has internet access.
- Reset Office credentials:
- Open Spotlight.
- Search for and open Keychain.
- Search for Office.
- Delete the data license file.
- Run the Microsoft 365 Activation troubleshooter.
If Word still says a subscription is required after that, remove the Office license files and reactivate:
- Run the License Removal Tool.
- Open Keychain Access.
- Delete these items:
- Microsoft Office Identities Cache 3
- Microsoft Office Identities Settings 3
- Microsoft Office Ticket Cache
- Restart the Mac.
- Open any Office app and sign in again to activate.
Notes:
- Changes in Keychain Access require local admin privileges.
- Office for Mac must contact the Office Licensing Service on the internet to activate.
- For organization-managed Microsoft 365, the user must have an assigned Office license before activation will succeed.
