A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If the DOCX file was deleted from OneDrive and then also removed from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, recovery depends on the account type and available restore features:
- Check the correct OneDrive account first. If multiple Microsoft accounts or a work/school account are used, the file may be in a different OneDrive account.
- If the file was deleted from a synced computer, check the local recycle location.
- On Windows: open Recycle Bin, select the file, right-click, and choose Restore.
- On Mac: open Trash, select the file, right-click, and choose Put back. This only applies if the file was deleted locally. Files deleted from the cloud do not appear in the computer Recycle Bin or Trash.
- If using OneDrive on the web, check Recycle bin again. Go to the OneDrive website, sign in, open Recycle bin, select the file, and choose Restore.
- If a Microsoft 365 subscription is available, try Restore your OneDrive. This feature can undo all actions on files and folders from the last 30 days. It is intended for cases where files were deleted, overwritten, corrupted, or affected by malware. Important: files or folders created after the selected restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- If the file was permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, it cannot be recovered. The documented limitation is that once a file has been permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, it can never be recovered.
- If this is a work or school account, contact the organization's IT helpdesk or admin. Work or school accounts may have organization-specific retention handling, and admins may be able to help in some cases.
- If this is a personal Microsoft account and the file is not recoverable through Recycle Bin or Restore your OneDrive, use Microsoft Support. Technical support is available through Contact Microsoft Support.
