The only things that work are Outlook and Teams, and the IT service said it's active. I don't know what the problem is.

    Hi Sarah,

If Outlook and Teams are working but Word, Excel, and other Microsoft 365 apps cannot be activated, it may indicate one of the following:

    • The school account is licensed only for services such as Outlook and Teams and does not include Microsoft 365 desktop apps.
    • The Microsoft 365 Apps license is assigned, but the activation has not synchronized correctly.
    • The Office apps are signed in with a different Microsoft account than the school account.

    Please check the following:

    1. Sign out of all Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
    2. Open Word and go to File > Account.
    3. Verify which account is shown under User Information and sign in with your school account.
    4. If an error message appears during activation, note the exact wording or provide a screenshot.
    5. Ask your school IT administrator to confirm that your account has a license that includes Microsoft 365 desktop applications, not only Outlook and Teams services.

Additionally, please feel free to share the exact error message you are encountering. If possible, include a screenshot, as this can help identify the cause more quickly.

    Kind regards,

This usually means the account is valid, but the Office apps are either using the wrong account, the assigned school license does not include desktop apps, or local activation data is stuck.

    Try this in order:

    1. Confirm the exact account used in Office apps
      • Microsoft 365 for business or education desktop apps require the work or school account, not a personal Microsoft account.
      • A personal Microsoft account cannot sign in to Microsoft 365 for business services unless a specific document was shared that way.
    2. Check whether the license is actually associated with Office desktop apps
      • If Outlook and Teams work but Word and Excel do not, the school account may be active but not assigned the Office desktop app rights.
      • Ask the school Microsoft 365 admin to verify which license is assigned to the account and whether Office desktop apps are included and enabled.
    3. Sign in at microsoft365.com with the school account
      • If an install option appears there, use that account for installation and activation.
      • If no install option appears after signing in with the work or school account, the organization may manage installs centrally, or the assigned license may not allow desktop app installs.
    4. Check for the wrong account in the Office apps
      • If Office shows activation or subscription errors, sign in using the school account and also test any personal email addresses previously used with Office, because activation can fail when the app is tied to a different account than expected.
    5. Remove conflicting Office installations on Windows
      • Activation can fail if multiple Office versions are installed.
      • Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Search for office.
      • If more than one version appears, uninstall the version not being used.
      • Restart the computer, open an Office app, and sign in again.
      • If needed, run an online repair afterward. Note: uninstalling the wrong version can remove apps currently in use.
    6. If the message says access to Office apps is blocked
      • The organization may have a conditional access policy.
      • Common causes are:
        • the device is not connected to the organization network
        • two-factor authentication has not been completed
        • the device is not joined to the domain
        • the device is not trusted

If web apps work but Word/Excel desktop apps still do not, the most likely next step is for the school admin to confirm the assigned education license and whether desktop Office apps are included for that account.
