Using Outlook for iOS for personal email and calendar management
This matches a known issue affecting Outlook.com/Hotmail accounts in the iPhone and iPad default Mail app.
Try these steps in order:
- On the iPad, open Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Tap the Hotmail/Outlook account.
- If the account is still present, open Account Settings or tap the Password field, enter the correct current password, then tap Done.
- Open the Mail app and check whether mail starts syncing.
If the iPhone account was deleted and cannot be added back because it says it cannot verify, remove and re-add it as Outlook.com:
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- If the account is partially present, delete it.
- Go back to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Outlook.com.
- Complete the Outlook.com sign-in flow.
If re-adding still fails:
- Remove the account again.
- Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Add the account back again through Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Outlook.com.
If a sign-in error appears, recover the Microsoft account first, then add it again in Mail. The documented sign-in issues include:
- “That password is incorrect for your Microsoft account.” → Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password
- “We can't sign you in” or “You've used an incorrect account or password too many times.” → I can't sign in to my Microsoft account
- Verification code problems such as “That code didn't work” or “Please request a new security code and try again.” → Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues
If email works on a computer but still not in Apple Mail after these steps, the issue may be with the iOS Mail app. In that case, Apple Support is the next path, or use the Outlook mobile app instead.
