To switch from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal, the current Family subscription must be canceled and then changed to a plan with fewer features.

Go to the Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the subscription.
Find Microsoft 365 Family and select Manage.
Select Cancel subscription.
On the Cancel page, choose the plan with fewer features, such as Microsoft 365 Personal.
Follow the prompts to complete the switch.

Important details:

The existing subscription might not change immediately.
The switch to Microsoft 365 Personal happens automatically at renewal.
Charges for the new plan start when it renews into that plan.
If the Family subscription is canceled, shared users lose Family sharing benefits, and storage allowances are reduced when the subscription ends.
After cancellation, storage reverts to 5 GB of cloud storage and 15 GB of Outlook.com storage.

If you simply want to cancel your Microsoft 365 Family subscription, you can manage your subscription by signing in to your Microsoft account and going to Services & subscriptions. From there, select your Microsoft 365 Family subscription and choose the option to cancel it. To switch to Microsoft 365 Personal, simply select the Microsoft 365 Personal plan and follow the on-screen instructions to purchase the subscription.

Hi,

If you want to switch from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal, the Family subscription normally needs to be changed or cancelled first. You can manage it here: https://account.microsoft.com/services Find Microsoft 365 Family and select "Manage." Microsoft may offer the option to switch to Personal. If not, you can turn off recurring billing/cancel Family and then purchase Personal when the Family subscription expires.

To help narrow this down:

Did you purchase Microsoft 365 Family directly from Microsoft, or through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer?
When you select "Manage" beside Microsoft 365 Family, what options do you see?
Are you trying to switch immediately, or just make sure it renews as Microsoft 365 Personal instead?

It was purchased from Best Buy. By a friend who no longer wants it and is basically computer illiterate

Since the Microsoft 365 Family subscription was purchased through Best Buy, the subscription and billing are managed by Best Buy. Microsoft specifically recommends contacting the third-party retailer for cancellation or billing-related issues: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/manage-your-microsoft-365-subscription-purchased-through-a-third-party

If you would like to switch from Microsoft 365 Family to Personal, I would first check with Best Buy whether the existing subscription can be changed, or whether it needs to be cancelled and a new Microsoft 365 Personal subscription purchased.
