My Microsoft account was compromised and I lost access to my Minecraft purchase

Hello, I need help recovering a Minecraft purchase from a compromised Microsoft account.

My original Microsoft account was compromised and the attacker changed the account's security information, including the email address associated with the account. I have tried Microsoft's account recovery process, but unfortunately I have been unable to recover the original account.

I originally purchased Minecraft on that compromised Microsoft account. I still have the original purchase confirmation and transaction/order information, so I can provide proof that I was the original purchaser.

I have now created a new, secure Microsoft account because I can no longer access the original account.

I understand that Minecraft purchases are normally tied to the Microsoft account that purchased them. However, since this was the result of an account compromise and I am the original purchaser, I would like to know whether there is any way for Microsoft/Minecraft Support to restore my Minecraft entitlement or provide an exception or other solution so I can use the purchase on my new account.

I am not requesting a refund. I only want to regain access to the Minecraft purchase that I originally paid for.

I can provide:

The original Microsoft account email/address

The new Microsoft account email/address

My Minecraft/Xbox gamertag

The original Minecraft purchase date

The Microsoft order number / transaction ID

The original purchase confirmation email

Any other information needed to verify ownership

Unfortunately, in cases like this it is harder to get your Microsoft account back due to all of the information been changed by the hacker. Microsoft uses the information on your Microsoft account to verify ownership. If this information has been changed, files deleted and security information changed, there is less information for Microsoft to go with.

With this being said, I don't know if you have completed the Microsoft account recovery form or the Xbox account recovery form. Since you have played Minecraft and were using Xbox services, please can you complete the Xbox account recovery form here: https://aka.ms/recovermyaccount

When completing this form, please include as much information as possible, that the Xbox team can use to verify ownership and investigate what has happened. This form, in particular, will ask for your Xbox gamertag, and device ID (Xbox or PC), so having these ready is a good first step.

However, I will warn you that if the team is unable to retrieve your account, they will suspend it to prevent further damage. They will email you using their email address to communicate their findings. To speak with this team, please respond to their email before the case is closed. This allows you to engage in conversations with the Xbox team who oversee this form.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you for your response and for pointing me toward the Xbox account recovery form.

I understand that the Xbox team may need the Xbox/PC device ID to verify ownership. Unfortunately, my PC was recently compromised by malware, and I had it completely wiped and Windows reinstalled by Best Buy as a security precaution. Because of that, I no longer have access to the device information from the previous Windows installation, and I have not been able to retrieve the original PC device ID from the current installation.

However, I can provide extensive other evidence that I am the original owner of the account and the Minecraft purchase. I still have the original Minecraft/Microsoft purchase and transaction records, including the order information and purchase confirmation. I can also provide my original account information, Minecraft/Xbox gamertag, payment information related to the purchase, and any other information that may help the Xbox team verify ownership.

I am happy to provide identification or any other documentation that is appropriate and necessary for the investigation.

Would the Xbox account recovery team still be able to investigate my case without the original PC device ID, given that the device was wiped specifically because it was compromised? If there are other pieces of information that would be more useful for verifying my ownership, I would be happy to provide them.

Would the Xbox account recovery team still be able to investigate my case without the original PC device ID, given that the device was wiped specifically because it was compromised?

They will still be able to sue the other information you have provided. When they respond to you, please email back and explain what has happened. They may be able to still identify your device. Especially if the device is listed on your Microsoft account still under devices.
