Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If the email currently used to sign in is an expired university work or school account, it cannot be converted into a personal Microsoft account email. The supported options depend on which account type is being used:
- If it is a personal Microsoft account: add a new email address as an alias, then make it the primary sign-in address.
- Go to the Microsoft account Edit account info page: Edit account info
- Select Add email.
- Add a new email address.
- After it is added, use Manage sign-in preferences to make the new address the primary alias.
- If it is a Microsoft 365 work or school account: the email address must be changed by an administrator in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Users > Active users.
- Select the user.
- On the Account tab, select Manage username and email.
- Edit the username and select the correct domain.
- Select Done.
Important details:
- If the university account has expired, access to that work or school account may no longer be available.
- For work or school accounts, changing the address requires an admin role such as user administrator.
- If the old sign-in address belongs to an organization, that organization may restrict adding or changing those email addresses.
- If the goal is to stop the “Which account do you want to use?” prompt, changing the personal Microsoft account primary alias can help.
