A number is displayed on the Authenticator to add when opening the account. There is no sign of anywhere to add the number when opening it.

Hi,

It works this way.

When signing in to the computer, a number is shown on the screen which is 2 digits.

You need to enter those two digits in the Microsoft Authenticator prompt to confirm the sign in aka Log in.

If you are using anything else rather than MS authenticator,

I think you might be seeing a one-time passcode. You need to enter the same after entering the password and the prompt should open.

If Microsoft Authenticator is showing a number, that number is not typed into the account page. It must be matched inside the Authenticator approval flow.

Use this sign-in flow:

Go to the site and enter the account username.
Select Next.
Select Send notification.
If needed, select Other ways to sign in > Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app.
When the sign-in screen shows a number, open Microsoft Authenticator on the phone.
Open the New sign-in request notification, or open the app directly.
Tap or enter the matching number in Authenticator, then select Approve.

If this started after moving to a new phone, and the account was restored from backup, one documented issue is "Sign in to add your account." For work or school accounts, the fix is to open the account in Authenticator and sign in again.
