Microsoft Surface Go will not accept boot or recovery options, as well as recovery drive

Hello all,

My Surface Go 2 is stuck on the Windows logo and will not accept any options for recovery. The tablet power is on, but only displays the Windows logo and nothing else.I’ve tried all that’s been listed on the website, to include holding the volume up and down buttons as well as creating a recovery drive.

I believe what started the issue was that the factory reset of the device was interrupted.image

With the extremely poor support network for Windows and lackluster to nonexistent customer service, I’m disappointed in a brand I once trusted. Hopefully you all can help, outside of notifying me to send it in and pay more for a device that should work as is.

    Which recovery drive did you actually make? There are two totally different things people call "recovery drive":

    The generic Windows one ("Create a recovery drive") — this only works if you build it from a working Windows PC and it's basically useless for reimaging a dead Go 2.

    The actual Surface Recovery Image — you sign into your Microsoft account on a different computer, pick your Go 2 by serial number, and download a real device-specific reinstall image. This is the one that matters here.

    If you used the first one, that's probably the whole problem.

    Button combo — for boot-from-USB on the Go 2, it's: hold Volume Down, tap Power, keep holding Volume Down until the logo shows up. But there's a separate combo to get into the actual firmware/UEFI settings: Volume Up + Power, release Power, keep holding Volume Up. If you've only tried one of these, try the other — from UEFI you can directly check that USB boot is enabled and the boot order is right, instead of hoping the logo screen does something.

    If none of that works — a correctly-built, serial-matched recovery USB just not getting picked up at all, even from UEFI — that's the real signal something's actually broken on the storage chip itself, and no amount of button-mashing fixes that. I won't sugarcoat it: at that point it's genuinely a hardware problem, not something you're doing wrong.
