A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Try the account setup path that matches the account type:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Select + Add account.
- Choose the correct type:
- Personal account for a Microsoft personal account
- Work or school account for a business or school account
- Other account for non-Microsoft accounts that use a QR code
For a Microsoft personal account:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/security.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Choose Use an app.
- In Authenticator, select Personal account and scan the QR code.
- If the camera does not work, use I can't scan the bar code on the PC and Enter code manually on the phone.
For a work or school account:
- Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
- Select Add sign-in method.
- Choose Microsoft Authenticator and select Add.
- Open Authenticator and add the account.
- If needed, scan the QR code or enter the code manually.
If Authenticator shows “To set up Microsoft Authenticator, you'll need to go to aka.ms/mfasetup on a web browser.”, the account does not have enough authentication methods configured yet. Complete setup in a browser first.
If Authenticator shows “You might be signing in from a location that is restricted by your admin”, or registration is blocked by Conditional Access, the work or school account administrator must enable this method.
If the account says it was added but no new tile appears, that can be expected for some Microsoft Entra ID setups. The sign-in method can be added successfully without creating a separate new account tile, and the existing work account entry is used for MFA.
If setup was interrupted and the app now asks for a code before the account was fully added, the MFA registration may need to be reset by the organization administrator so the account can be registered again.

- Add Entra ID account in Authenticator App - Microsoft Q&A Hello, I have changed my mobile phone and I have added under the Authenticator app phone and ms account. However when I am trying to add the Entra ID, even though it is available under the add ‘+’ button in the app and the process seems to flow. It is not appearing on my account list in the app. Can you please help me!
- I try to set up study email but authenticator is asking for codes before I set up the account - Microsoft Q&A Hi, I was going to add an study account and I have already went to the step of scanning the QR code. However, at that moment, my phone turned off and I recharged it. I tried to rescan the QR code , but the code became invalid. When I try to generate the QR code it asks me to enter the number on my authenticator app, but I didn't even add my account successfull. I have tried to reinstall the app to re add the account but failed. I even tried to regenerate the QR code by logging into the security page, but it still asks me to enter the code on the app. It seems that I pre-add the account in the authenticator app, what should I do now to fix the issue?
