This usually happens when the Mac is signed in with the wrong account, the Office 2024 license was not linked to the account used for reinstall, or older Microsoft 365/trial apps are still on the Mac.
Use this reinstall path on the iMac:
- Confirm the Office 2024 license is associated with the correct Microsoft account.
If this was a home purchase, sign in at https://setup.office.com if the product key was never redeemed. After redemption, the license is added to the Microsoft account.
- Reinstall from the Microsoft account that owns Office 2024.
Sign in with the same Microsoft account originally used for the purchase/redeem process, then use the install option for Office 2024.
- If the apps still ask for Microsoft 365, remove the existing Office apps and reinstall. On Mac:
- Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Locate the Office apps, control-click each one, and choose Move to Trash.
- Reinstall Office again from the account-linked installer.
- Run the Mac installer:
- Open Finder > Downloads.
- Double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg.
- Select Continue through the prompts.
- Accept the license agreement.
- Choose Install.
- Enter the Mac login password if prompted.
- Click Close when installation finishes.
- Activate Office 2024 on the Mac:
- Open Launchpad.
- Start Microsoft Word.
- In the What’s New window, select Get Started.
- Sign in if prompted.
If the installer still shows Microsoft 365 wording, that can still be the shared installer. The important part is signing in with the same Microsoft account that has the Office 2024 license.
If the install option is missing after sign-in, and this is not a home purchase, the license may not be assigned to the account. If the problem continues after reinstalling, contact Microsoft support.
