Free family version to paid personal

If Microsoft 365 Family was already renewed on the account, the account can still have only one active Microsoft 365 subscription at a time. To move to Microsoft 365 Personal instead of Family:

1. Sign in to the Services & subscriptions page for the Microsoft account that has the current subscription.
2. Turn off recurring billing for the current subscription.
3. Redeem the new Microsoft 365 Personal product key at microsoft365.com/setup using the same Microsoft account.
4. During redemption, choose the option to switch plans if prompted.

If the Family renewal came from a free offer that was redeemed on an existing Family subscription, there is a specific option when redeeming a free Personal offer: redeem now and switch the Family subscription to Personal, which adds 12 months. If the subscription is converted to Personal, sharing is no longer available.

If the product key has already been used before, it cannot be redeemed again. In that case, go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page to manage the subscription instead.
