Error 0x8004def4 when signing in to OneDrive is commonly caused by a folder name conflict, an incorrectly synchronized OneNote notebook, or having the OneDrive Store app installed alongside the OneDrive sync app.

    Try this in order:

    1. Install and run Microsoft 365 Support and Recovery Assistant.
    2. In the tool, select OneDrive for Business > Next.
    3. Select I need help syncing my OneDrive files > Next.

If the assistant does not fix it:

    1. Reset OneDrive.
    2. If the issue continues, uninstall OneDrive and then reinstall it.

For 0x8004def4, Microsoft also notes that this can happen if the OneDrive sync app is being used while the OneDrive Store app is also installed. In that case, uninstall all OneDrive app versions, then reinstall the latest OneDrive sync app.

The files listed on the local drive — OneDrive.App.exe, OneDrive.exe, and OneDrive.VisualElementsManifest.xml — are OneDrive application files. Their presence alone does not fix the issue; the recommended fix is to repair the installation by using the recovery assistant first, then reset, uninstall, and reinstall if needed.

Microsoft also states that uninstalling or reinstalling OneDrive does not delete OneDrive files or cloud data.

    Hi, Elly Johnson

Error 0x8004def4 can also occur when OneDrive’s local settings have become corrupted or when a VPN, proxy, firewall, or network filter prevents the app from connecting. The three files you listed are normal OneDrive program files and should not be deleted individually.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Close OneDrive completely from Task Manager. Press Windows + R, enter the following path, and press Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings Copy this folder somewhere as a backup, then delete its contents. Start OneDrive again and sign in. Clearing this settings folder has resolved 0x8004def4 when the usual repairs did not.

Temporarily disconnect any VPN. Open Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings and ensure Automatically detect settings is selected. If you do not intentionally use a proxy, clear Use a proxy server. Then test OneDrive on another network, such as a phone hotspot.

Sign in at OneDrive on the web to confirm that the account itself works, then check the Microsoft service status. Also install any pending Windows updates before testing again.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
