My personal Microsoft account is connected to a tenant in Azure/Entra and I cannot leave it. I have followed various instructions for leaving a tenant, but I always get a sign-in error: You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead. I no longer work with the tenant organization and have no access there.

Steps to repeat the problem (following these instructions)

  1. Open a private browser session in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Because I am using a personal account, I go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com?tenantId=contoso.onmicrosoft.com (replacing "contoso.onmicrosoft.com" with the domain of my tenant)
  3. I get "sign in to your account"
    1. I enter the email address for my personal Microsoft account and click Next.
      1. "[domain name of my email address] isn't in our system. Make sure you typed it correctly."
    2. Click sign-in options.
      1. Use Face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key
      2. Sign in with a passkey (Windows Hello, Passkey for login.microsoft.com)
      3. "Something went wrong. Please try again." Trying again fails the same way.
    3. Click Sign-in options
      1. Sign in to an organization
      2. Supply domain name of my tenant
      3. "Sorry, but we're having trouble signing you in.
      4. Request Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] Correlation Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]
                      Timestamp: 2026-08-27T16:00:03Z

                      Message: AADSTS900144: The request body must contain the following parameter: 'client_id'.
                 ```1. Repeat steps 1 and 2
  4. I get "sign in to your account"
  5. Use my Windows Hello passkey
  6. It appears I am getting signed in; I am asked to confirm my sign-in and am asked whether to stay signed in (I say no).
  7. I get redirected to sign-in to your account. I enter my passkey again.
  8. "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead."
So I am unable to follow those instructions. Try this instead:
  1. Open a private browser session in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations
  3. I get "sign in to your account"
  4. Same attempts and results as step 5, in previous attempt.
Next try:
  1. Open a private browser session in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to [https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations/leave/tenant ID]
  3. Repeat steps and get same results as previous attempts to sign in to account.
Next try:
  1. Go to Manage tenants in Azure.
  2. Select the organization I wish to leave (Tenant type: Workforce). There is only one tenant listed.
  3. Click "Leave tenant" above the list.
  4. I am presented with a Microsoft Sign in screen.
  5. Sign in with the same passkey I used to sign into Azure.
  6. "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead."
  7. Click sign-in options.
  8. Choose Sign in to an organization.
  9. Enter the domain name of the tenant.
  10. Loop back to Sign in.
  11. Sign in with email address of my personal Microsoft Account (same account passkey is for, same used to log on to Azure).
  12. "[domain name of my email address] isn't in our system. Make sure you typed it correctly."
Out of ideas. Need help.
Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to outline all the troubleshooting steps you've already completed.
Based on the information you've provided, it appears that the self-service process for leaving the organization cannot verify your personal Microsoft account. As a result, the next step will need to be handled by the organization that owns the tenant.
I recommend reaching out to the organization's IT administrator or privacy/contact team and requesting that they remove the guest account associated with your personal Microsoft account from their Microsoft Entra ID directory. To help them locate the correct account, provide your personal email address along with the tenant name or tenant ID, if available.
Unfortunately, while the self-service leave option remains unavailable, there is no way to remove this guest account from your side. The removal must be performed by an administrator within the organization that invited the account.
I hope this helps clarify the situation. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, feel free to reply.
Kind regards,
