Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
This usually means Windows or the browser is blocking Teams from using the microphone and camera, or the browser site permission is set to block them.
Try this in order:
- In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Microsoft Teams (work or school) if it appears.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- If these were already on, turn them off and back on.
- In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Turn on Let apps access your camera.
- Turn on Microsoft Teams if it appears.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera if using the desktop app or browser.
- Close Teams completely and reopen it. If it still stays gray, restart Windows.
- If using Teams on the web, allow the site in the browser:
- In the Teams page, select the lock/site permissions icon next to the address bar.
- Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- Refresh the Teams page and rejoin the call.
- In Microsoft Edge, check browser permissions:
- Go to Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions.
- Open Microphone and turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- Open Camera and turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- If the microphone still does not work, check the Windows input device:
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, make sure the correct microphone is selected in Choose your input device.
- Speak and verify Test your microphone detects sound.
- If the camera shows a blocked symbol or privacy icon, check for a physical camera shutter, privacy slider, or keyboard privacy key on the laptop. Also test the built-in Camera app. If the Camera app is also blocked, the issue is outside Teams.
If the controls are gray only in the browser, the browser permission is the most likely cause. If they are gray in the desktop app too, Windows privacy settings are the first place to fix.
