Office 365 for Students Wrong License Despite Proper Instructions

Hello

through the University of Applied Sciences you can get the Office 365 license for students. The instructions say that you can then also use the desktop versions. This also worked without any problems for a fellow student; but not for me.

I followed the instructions 1 to 1 as well, but now I have the A1 license, which means that you can only use the online applications. All you should do is follow the link to the homepage and then register your email address. Then wait 24 hours and the account will be activated.

That's what I did.

But now I can't log in on my desktop versions and the account information also says that the license from me is only valid for online applications.

Now my question is: How can that be? What could I possibly have done wrong? And how do I get access to the desktop versions, as it is explicitly stated in the instruction article and works for others?

I wanted to update or update the Office apps again, but I can only download them from the web if I pay for them.

The university refers to Microsoft support.

I understand how frustrating it is when your account activates with an online-only license despite following your university's instructions.

By default, self-registering with a school email address provisions the standard Office 365 A1 plan, which includes access to the web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook only.

To use the downloadable desktop applications, your account requires an Office 365 A3, A5, or Office 365 A1 Plus license specifically assigned to you by your institution's IT department. If a classmate has access to these desktop applications, it means either your university has an enterprise education agreement in place that grants students access to them, or your classmate is using a separate enterprise license that includes desktop application access.

Since Microsoft Customer Support cannot directly modify licenses or assign subscriptions within the university's specific tenant, these settings must be adjusted by your school's administrator; alternatively, you could check if your classmates have purchased separate licenses for the Office apps:

Step 1: Verify Your Current License:

  • Go to portal.office.com/account and sign in.
  • Click Subscriptions.
  • Under Licenses, check if you see "The latest desktop version of Office" listed. If it is missing, your account currently lacks desktop activation rights. User's image

Step 2: Contact Your University IT Administrator:

  • Reach out directly to your university’s IT Help Desk or Microsoft 365 Administrator (rather than general university administration).
  • Request that they check your account in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Users > Active Users > Licenses and Apps and update your license assignment from Office 365 A1 Student to Office 365 A3/A5 Student Use Benefit.

Step 3: Sign Out and Re-authenticate:

  • Once your IT administrator updates your license, log out of all Office applications and sign back in to apply the changes.
