A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Try these checks in order:
- Make sure the phone is not in Do Not Disturb or Quiet mode.
- In the phone settings, confirm push notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator.
- In Authenticator, go to Settings and make sure Show notifications is turned on.
- Check that the app is allowed to use sound/vibration for alerts.
- Verify the phone has a working network connection. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- If using a VPN, disconnect it and test again.
- Make sure the device Date & time is correct.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version. Versions older than 12 months are not supported.
- If notifications work for some accounts but not one specific account, remove that account from the app and add it again, allowing notifications during setup.
- If a prompt was expected during sign-in but nothing arrived, check whether the notification was sent to an older phone where Authenticator was previously active.
If the app shows "Enable push notifications to receive alerts", enable notifications in device settings, confirm network connectivity, and try removing and adding the account again.
If authentication still does not complete, also check:
- the app is unlocked
- notifications are not silent
- the device is online
If none of these steps fix it:
- for a personal account, use another verification method if available, then contact Support
- for a work or school account, contact the IT admin to re-register or reset the authentication method
