A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
To get the current free OneDrive app working again on a Windows laptop:
- Check which OneDrive app is installed.
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps and search for OneDrive.
- Microsoft OneDrive is the backup and sync app.
- OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation is the Microsoft Store viewing app and does not back up and sync files.
- If backup and sync is needed, install Microsoft OneDrive from the website version.
- Update Windows first.
- Open Windows Update and install all available updates.
- Keeping Windows up to date can help resolve OneDrive sync problems.
- Download and install the latest OneDrive app.
- Download the latest version of OneDrive and install it.
- If the installer closes automatically, the latest version is already installed.
- Restart the laptop.
- Start OneDrive again.
- Select Start, search for OneDrive, and open the OneDrive desktop app.
- When setup opens, sign in with the Microsoft account used for OneDrive.
If OneDrive still is not working:
- If the message says “A newer version of OneDrive is installed”, update Windows, install the latest OneDrive again, then open the OneDrive desktop app and sign in.
- If the issue is Error Code 1 or a general sync problem, check whether OneDrive works online by selecting the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area and choosing View online.
- If the app appears broken, uninstall and reinstall OneDrive. Microsoft states that uninstalling, disabling, or unlinking OneDrive does not delete files or data, and files remain available online.
If the laptop came with a paid storage plan and the storage upgrade is not showing, storage upgrades can take up to 24 hours to appear in the account.
If help is still needed after reinstalling:
- For personal accounts, use Contact Microsoft Support.
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT helpdesk or admin.
