  1. What do you do when you request a code and Microsoft doesn't send one via email?
  2. I can't use any of the other means.
  3. Also, how does one get a security key to insert into a USB port?
  4. I set up a six digit number to sign in with but that box suddenly doesn't display.
  5. Asking via their AI is futile.

If a Microsoft account verification code is not arriving by email, use these checks and recovery paths:

    1. Check the correct mailbox. Verification codes sent by email only go to the primary alias or to another email already added as a sign-in verification method.
    2. Check Junk/Spam. Valid verification code emails come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com. Mark that sender as trusted.
    3. Avoid repeated code requests. Too many requests can trigger a temporary block and Microsoft may stop sending codes for a period of time.
    4. If the backup email is another Microsoft account, use a private browsing window. Signing in to the backup mailbox can sign out the first account in a normal browser session. Using privacy mode allows both sessions to stay open.
    5. If no other verification method is available, select I don't have any of these during sign-in and follow the prompts.
    6. If the sign-in page says to make sure a security code can be received, verify or add new security info. That prompt can be skipped for 24 hours at a time, but after seven days from the first notice, updated security info is required before sign-in continues.
    7. If sign-in is completely blocked, use the Microsoft Sign-in helper or Contact Support. Support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details.

For the missing six-digit sign-in option: the available sign-in box depends on the sign-in method currently being offered. If the saved method is no longer available on the account, use Security > Manage how I sign in and add another method such as Microsoft Authenticator, recovery email, or passkey. Up to 10 verification methods can be added.

For a USB security key: physical security keys are listed as a passwordless sign-in method. The provided material confirms they are supported as a passwordless option, but it does not include purchase or setup steps.

    A practical next step is:

    • Go to Sign in
    • Open Manage how I sign in
    • Check whether the email, phone, Authenticator, passkey, or other verification methods are still listed
    • Add a new method if the option is available
    • If locked out, use the Sign-in helper
