Regarding vertical sections in SharePoint portal sites: When I change the zoom level in my web browser (Edge or Chrome), the vertical sections move to the bottom of the web page. I would like to fix them as two-column sections. Is there a setting to do this?

The behavior you are experiencing is standard for modern SharePoint pages. Vertical sections are designed to be responsive; consequently, when the page width narrows such as when increasing the browser zoom level or using a higher display scaling setting the vertical section shifts from the right side to the bottom of the page.

Currently, SharePoint does not offer a setting to lock the position of vertical sections or force them to display horizontally across all zoom levels. I fully agree that the ability to pin vertical sections to maintain a two-column (or side-by-side) layout would be a valuable improvement, especially for SharePoint pages that serve as portals or navigation hubs.

Available Configurations & Alternative Workarounds

Adjust Responsive Reflow Position (Top vs. Bottom):

  • While you cannot force it to stay on the right, you can choose whether the vertical section moves to the top or bottom when collapsed on smaller screen viewports:
  • Edit the page and select the Edit section (pencil icon) on the Vertical Section.
  • In the property panel on the right, under Collapsible section settings / Responsive behavior, select whether you prefer the content to appear at the Top or Bottom.

Use Standard Multi-Column Sections for Consistent Side-by-Side Layouts:

  • If keeping content side-by-side across all zoom levels is crucial for your design, consider replacing the vertical section with a Two-column or One-third right standard section layout. Standard section columns maintain higher elasticity before collapsing, though extreme zoom levels will still trigger standard responsive reflowing.

    There is no setting in SharePoint to lock vertical sections in place; they are designed to be responsive and will move to the bottom when the browser zoom or screen width narrows. The only workaround is to use standard two‑column layouts or adjust responsive behavior settings.

    Why Vertical Sections Move

    Responsive design: Modern SharePoint pages automatically reflow content depending on viewport width.

    Zoom effect: Increasing zoom reduces effective width, triggering the vertical section to collapse to the bottom.

    Breakpoint: This usually happens when the window width is below ~1024–1365px depending on scaling.

    Available Options

    1. Responsive Behavior Settings

    • Edit the page → select the vertical section → in the property panel, choose whether it collapses to the top or bottom when reflowed.
    • This doesn’t keep it side‑by‑side, but lets you control placement.

    2. Use Standard Multi‑Column Sections

    • Replace vertical sections with a two‑column or one‑third right layout.
    • These maintain side‑by‑side content longer before collapsing, though extreme zoom still forces reflow.
