If the password does not work, try retrieving or resetting it before resetting the Surface. If the device still cannot be accessed, use one of these reset paths:
- From the sign-in screen:
- Press Windows logo key + L if needed to return to the lock screen.
- Hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- If Windows still starts normally:
- For Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC.
- For Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Get started under Reset this PC.
- Choose the reset option:
- Keep my files: reinstalls Windows and keeps personal files, but removes installed apps, drivers, and settings changes.
- Remove everything: removes personal files, apps, settings, and installed drivers.
- When prompted, choose Cloud download or Local reinstall. Cloud download is recommended, and the Surface should be connected to the internet.
Important:
- A reset removes apps that were installed later.
- If planning to sell, recycle, donate, or send the device for replacement, use Remove everything and choose to fully clean the drive. This is more secure but can take 1–2 hours.
- Have product keys and installation files ready for desktop apps that need to be reinstalled afterward.
If reset fails or the Surface keeps returning to Choose an option, try a Surface USB recovery drive instead. This reinstalls Windows, deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps.
If the Choose an option screen appears again after reset and Windows does not start, the Surface needs service.
