Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Since activation worked before and the issue started suddenly on a fully updated Mac, use this Mac-specific activation path:
- Verify the licensed account is the one being used in Office.
- In Word, sign out, then sign back in with the Microsoft account associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If prompted, choose Sign in with another account.
- For consumer subscriptions, confirm the license appears at
https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Try normal activation again.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Open Microsoft Word.
- In the What’s New window, select Get Started.
- On Sign in to activate Office, select Sign in.
- If no sign-in prompt appears, open a blank file and go to File > New from template > Sign in.
- If Office says activated before but still asks to activate, fully quit and reopen the app.
- In Word, select Word > Quit Word.
- Reopen Word and check whether the activation prompt clears.
- Reset the stored Office credentials in Keychain.
- Open Spotlight.
- Search for and open Keychain or Keychain Access.
- Search for Office.
- Delete the Office data license file.
- Then try activation again.
- If the activation loop continues, remove old license data and reactivate.
- Run the Microsoft 365 Activation troubleshooter from
https://aka.ms/SaRA-OfficeActivation-sarahome. - If needed, run the License Removal Tool, restart the Mac, then open any Office app and sign in again to reactivate.
- Run the Microsoft 365 Activation troubleshooter from
- If the symptom is repeated sign-in prompts or Authentication Expired, check whether Office was moved from the default /Applications folder.
- That condition can cause repeated keychain prompts and sign-in failures.
- Reset keychain permissions using the Microsoft guidance for repeated keychain access.
- If the Mac shows Office in view-only mode after the recent update, remove Office license files, restart the Mac, and reinstall Office from the Microsoft account page, then sign in again.
Important:
- Deleting Keychain items or removing license files resets Office activation on the Mac and requires signing in again.
- If the account is a work or school account and no license is assigned, the organization’s admin must assign the license.
