Use this recovery path:
- Start with the Microsoft sign-in helper. It is the primary troubleshooter for Microsoft account sign-in problems and can identify available recovery options: Sign-in helper.
- If the verification code options shown during sign-in are not recognized, select I don't have any of these and follow the prompts to update or recover access.
- If the email address or phone number offered for verification looks wrong, first confirm the Microsoft account was typed correctly, including the full domain such as
.comor.co.uk, and check for name spelling mistakes. - If sign-in still fails, complete the account recovery form from a device and location previously used with that account, such as the usual home PC or home network. Gather any saved passwords first if available in Microsoft Edge, Windows Web Credentials, Chrome, Mac keychain, or iCloud Keychain. The recovery form is here: Account recovery form.
- If repeated verification attempts are being blocked with a “Try another verification method” type issue, use another verification method on the account if available, try a different network, and then wait at least 24 hours before trying again. Avoid many repeated attempts because that can extend the block.
- If unrequested verification codes are arriving, do not respond to them. That can indicate someone is trying to access the account.
- If technical help is still needed after using the sign-in helper and recovery options, use Contact Microsoft Support and select Get Help.
Important limits:
- Microsoft support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
- If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot bypass that protection.
- For a Windows local account password, reset is only available from the sign-in screen if security questions were previously configured.
