Unable to find BitLocker Recovery key on Microsoft Website

Hello,

I am Diganta from India. I am using one Dell Inspiron 14 model laptop. I purchased from Chroma Store, Pune. In 2025 without validation BitLocker encryption, I removed my HDD from the laptop and upgraded one SSD. After that I connected my HDD to one external case to copy data and found it was encrypted which I was not aware. I checked the key login to Microsoft website but surprisingly no keys available for the HDD instead of showing recovery keys for my new SSD only. I have more data in the HDD which are very important. When I purchased the laptop, it was pre-loaded windows from the store. But I login the laptop using my credential and license is in my name. But why the recovery key is not available I am confused and frustrated. Kindly please help me.

This is not ok for home users. I am broken. I have more important data. Anyways thanks. I have another Linux PC and MAC OS very good then Microsoft security.

I wish I could share good news, but the truth is no one can get you the bitlocker key, including Microsoft staff/support. https://support.microsoft.com/windows/find-your-bitlocker-recovery-key-6b71ad27-0b89-ea08-f143-056f5ab347d6 The link here says:"Important: Microsoft Support doesn't have the ability to retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key."

Is this where you looked? https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

If you set it up with school or work account, it is worth checking here as well https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey sign in with your work/school email credential in that case.

Any chance your laptop was purchased used, or already set up for you? Or was it gifted? Or have you set it up with a different account at first? The key is stored with the very Microsoft account used to set up the computer for the first time, even if you had got rid of that account and set it up with a different account. So, if your computer was set up by anyone at the store you bought it from, it would be that person's account.

I assume you don't remember opting out of not saving it in Microsoft account, and saving it to a local file instead? That's another possibility.

If you can't find it at all, there's really no way to go around it. Sorry.

I think it was with the store IT guy during configuration. Laptop was pre-loaded and I purchased and login with my Microsoft account. Microsoft must have recovery keys from the S/N of laptop. Policy is not ok of Microsoft.

While I feel your pain, I am independent and I am just here to provide you with honest and factual information. It is out of my control what Microsoft does or doesn't do.

Although, honestly, if Microsoft kept its own accessible copies of customers’ BitLocker recovery keys, it would create major security and privacy risks. Those keys could become a target for hackers, insider abuse, social-engineering attacks, or legal demands, since anyone who obtains the recovery key can decrypt the protected drive. It would also make Microsoft responsible for verifying ownership and safeguarding a highly sensitive means of bypassing the device’s normal encryption protections. This is why Microsoft provides ways for users to store the keys instead.

What Microsoft could do better, though, is to educate and inform users of such encryption and how the key is being stored.
