For a Surface on Windows 11 that is not updating correctly, use this path:
- Open the Surface app.
- Expand Help & support and check the update status.
- If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
- After installation, restart the device: Start > Power > Restart.
If the update still does not install:
- Manually install the Surface drivers and firmware package for the exact Surface Book model.
- On the Microsoft Download Center page for the device, select Download.
- If multiple files are listed, choose the .msi file that matches the Surface model and Windows version. If there is no exact Windows build match, select the .msi that is closest to, but lower than, the installed build number.
- Open the downloaded .msi file and complete setup.
- Restart the Surface again.
Important:
- Surface updates are released in stages, so they may not appear at the same time on every device.
- Firmware updates cannot be uninstalled or rolled back.
- Surface Book and Surface Book 2 are no longer within the driver and firmware servicing period, so they will not receive new driver and firmware updates, but previously released updates remain available for download.
- Support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.
If the Surface still is not working correctly after restart and manual installation, use the Surface help page or the Surface app support options.
