To activate Windows 11, use this order:
- Check activation status:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Review the activation state.
- If prompted, enter the 25-character product key.
- If Windows is connected to the internet, it should try to activate automatically.
- If the device uses a digital license, link it to a Microsoft account:
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info and confirm the account shows Administrator.
- Confirm it is a Microsoft account by checking whether an email address appears above Administrator.
- Go back to Activation, select Add an account, then sign in.
- The expected result is: Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter if Windows still is not activated:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- This option is available only when Windows 11 is not activated.
- An internet connection is required.
- Administrator rights are required.
- If online activation still fails, use Installation ID and Confirmation ID:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- On newer builds, select Automated Help. On earlier builds, select Activate by Phone.
- Select the country or region if prompted and get the Installation ID.
- Go to the Product Activation Portal and submit the Installation ID.
- Return to the Activation screen, select Enter Confirmation ID, enter it, and select Activate Windows.
- If the Activation page does not show those options, use an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
SLMGR /dtito display the Installation ID. - Submit that ID in the Product Activation Portal.
- Run
SLMGR /atp <enter your Confirmation ID>. - Then run
SLMGR /dlito verify activation. - Risk note: use the command exactly as shown. Do not include
<,>, hyphens, or spaces in the Confirmation ID.
- If the problem started after major hardware changes, use the Activation troubleshooter for that scenario. A significant hardware change such as a motherboard replacement can prevent Windows from finding the matching digital license.
If none of these steps works, contact support from the activation troubleshooting page.
