Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This notification is often caused by a problem with the Microsoft 365 subscription payment, such as an expired or canceled card.
Try this first:
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Under Microsoft 365, check whether the subscription is active.
- If it has expired, renew it.
- Then go to Payment options.
- Check whether the payment method shows an error, and update it if needed.
- Restart Word or another Office app and check whether the notice is gone.
If the subscription was bought through a third-party retailer, payment changes must be handled through that retailer.
If the notice still appears after renewing or updating payment details:
- If Microsoft 365 was bought as a physical box or card, the product key may still need to be entered before the subscription starts.
- Check the renewal status online before contacting support.
To request contact from support, use Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then select Contact Support to be routed to the best support option.
If this is a work or school Microsoft 365 subscription, contact the Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.
If nothing is done, Office can eventually go into reduced functionality mode: documents can still be opened and printed, but not edited or newly created.
